The Most Scenic Autumn Drives in England

With the mercury falling and the leaves changing, it’s time to start thinking about autumn getaways. However, at Munster Tyres, we’re more about the journey than the destination.

There’s nothing quite like an autumn drive. Whether you’re zig-zagging through the trees with rain gently pattering the windscreen, or churning up leaves on a field-adjacent road – a long car journey at this time of the year is just pure catharsis.

Barnstaple – Newquay

If you’re heading to Cornwall and want to take the scenic route, we recommend you travel the Atlantic highway from Barnstaple to Newquay. This route takes you 160 miles along the north Cornwall coast, and it’s one of our favourites. Notable sights to see along the way: Constantine Bay and the Bedruthan Steps – you can even take a private toll road along the way to see the lighthouse at Trevose Head.

Somerset – Cheddar Gorge

The south of England isn’t known for its verticality, however, Cheddar Gorge is an exception. In fact, the winding roads around its steep cliffs are so exciting, that we recommend you weave it into your autumn drive.

Journey down the B3135 from Somerset and see the 27 breathtaking cliffs as you drive by. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you could even stop off and do some exploring!

Cheltenham – Stratford-upon-Avon

If you’re looking for something a little less hilly and a little more leafy, take a trip from Cheltenham to Stratford-upon-Avon. The Cotswolds are a pastoral paradise, and this journey will allow you to see all that the Great British countryside has to offer: tranquil woodland, colourful meadows – you name it.

Begin your trip by taking the B4632 – it’s not a major roadway, so a peaceful ride is assured. We recommend stopping in Chipping Campden too. There, you can see beautiful buildings crafted from Cotswold stone and a fantastic array of traditional pubs and cafés.

Thetford Forest trail

More of a circuit than a journey, the Thetford Forest trail is nevertheless an exciting autumn drive. Thetford Forest is the largest lowland pine forest in Britain, covering around 19,000 hectares to the north and west of Thetford.

One of the reasons that this trail is just unmissable in autumn is the sheer number of deciduous trees; expect rich reddy-brown leaves covering the forest floor like a blanket.

To begin your journey, head to the market town of Thetford and then north on the A134 towards the forest.

Forest of Dean (Chepstow – Hereford)

The Forest of Dean is a former royal hunting ground and one of the UK’s few surviving ancient woodlands, so it’s the perfect location for your autumn drive. Start by walking around Chepstow’s 11th century castle, then jump back in your car and head north towards Tintern, into the heart of the Wye Valley – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, no less.

Take one of the meandering country lanes which run alongside the river and absorb its beauty. As you head up into Hereford, you can take a look at the cathedral and enjoy a well-deserved pint at a cosy pub.
