How to Prevent an Icy Windshield
Imagine scraping ice off your car every morning. It can be frustrating and inconvenient especially if you are running late for work. Winter brings issues of having to deal with snow, ice, and frost. If you park your car outside you will have a routine chore every morning of clearing ice. Naturally, you can’t clear a small part of the windscreen and drive off. For road safety, you should ensure you can see the road. The daily battle with ice and snow has to stop. Here are some tips on how to deal with snow. The best part is you do need to build a garage or spend a lot of money.
Use a Windscreen Cover
Covering your windshield with a windshield protector prevents ice from sticking on the glass. You can also use cardboard, a rubber bath mat, tarp or cloth. Just spread it across your windshield and secure it with windshield wipers. Whatever you choose to cover your windscreen with should be dry. Have a carrier bag in your car to put your windshield cover in the morning. It is not advisable to use a newspaper. They are thin, and you will still have ice to scrape off in the morning. Consider covering your wing mirrors with a plastic bag and use a rubber band to keep it in place.
Use a De-Icer
You can get a night before de-icer. You spray it on your windscreen before going to bed. The de-icer stops frost from sticking on the glass. Clearing ice in the morning will take less time. The de-icers are available in petrol stations and some supermarkets and are affordable.
Use Vinegar
If you are not a fan of commercial de-icers, try household products. Vinegar and water mixture will do the job. The vinegar solution should be three parts vinegar and 1 part water. You have to dilute vinegar to prevent a reaction with the rubber at the edge of the windscreen. Pour the solution in a spray bottle and squirts it on the windshield before you retire to bed. The mixture prevents frost from forming on the windshield. You must spray the solution daily. Remember to spray the passenger windows as well.
Spray Alcohol Solution
If you do not have vinegar, alcohol works as well. You need to mix a third water and two-thirds rubbing alcohol and spray it on your windshield. It will prevent the forming of ice. It is also useful in clearing ice. Although people have concerns that rubbing alcohol rubs off paint, it does not cause any harm to your car.
Park Facing East
You can either park your car inside a garage or if you park outside, make sure it is facing the east. The sun rises from the east; therefore, heat from the sun will defrost the ice on your windscreen.
For road safety during winter, your car should be clear of ice or condensation before departure. Lack of visibility on the road is dangerous. The above tips will give you a hassle free morning and an extra minute of sleep.
