A Driving Home for Christmas Checklist
Spending Christmas time with your loved ones is what it’s all about, it’s what keeps us going through the harsh winter months. However, as time goes on, children get older and families move away, reconciling for Christmas becomes increasingly difficult – especially if you live at opposite ends of the country!
During the Christmas period, millions of people all over the UK will be making long journeys homes. So with this in mind, Munster Tyres will be offering some tips and advice to motorists, ensuring that their journey home to their loved ones is as safe as possible.
Pre-checks
- Tyres: Even though you should be checking this regularly, it’s definitely worth testing your tyre pressure before you set off. You don’t want to be stuck on the side of the road with a flat tyre during the Christmas rush.
- Service: If you haven’t taken your car in for a service recently and winter’s arrived, then it might be worth getting one before your big journey for added peace of mind.
- Lights: There’s a chance you might be driving at night or in poor visibility on your journey home, so checking that your lights work is essential.
- Engine oil: Long journeys and motorway driving can drain your engine oil, so locate the dipstick under your vehicle’s bonnet and inspect the level.
Winter tyres
When the roads are icy, which is not unlikely in December, it’s best to avoid using your vehicle as much as possible for safety reasons, but sometimes that just isn’t possible. If you’re a motorist who only really makes short journeys, perhaps swapping out your tyres for winter-ready ones is a little overkill, but if you’ve got a long drive ahead of you in potentially dangerous conditions, it’s worth considering a set of winter tyres.
Charge your phone
In this day and age, most people do not need telling twice to charge their phone, however, when it comes to long journeys, making sure you’ve got battery is essential. If you have any problems on your way, letting your friends and family know can be a lifesaver, and if you’ve broken down and you have breakdown cover, you’ll need to ring them as soon as possible!
Snacks
Whether you want to keep your energy up or simply try and combat the monotony of motorway driving, keeping your glove box stocked up with snacks is essential. And, if you’re feeling particularly festive, grab yourself some mince pies but not too many, though, you don’t want to ruin your appetite!
